Many organizations have made heavy investments over the years in their on-premises EDW environment. As new modern analytics projects emerge, these companies elect to keep intact their existing EDW and extend it to the cloud, evolving towards a hybrid data warehousing environment.
MIGRATE YOUR EDW
Other organizations who have made heavy investments in their on-premises EDW, elect to migrate their entire EDW environment to the cloud. These migrations are often triggered by the desire to avoid hefty contract renewal fees for traditional data warehousing software. Instead they opt for a cloud platform as their new EDW, eliminating the need for hefty upfront fees for their data warehouse software and the ability to cost effectively scale their data warehouse project.
ON PREMISE
Some organizations are starting projects of implementing Data Warehouse and don't know where to start, do they need to start in cloud or is it fine to have a on-prem EDW. In some pictures the best way to work in on-prem because of regulations from the own organization or from regulatory entities.
